"Bachelor's Song" - Oil painting - 17"x11 1/2"
The Akia Po La Au is a small omnivorous bird with a highly adaptive beak structure which serves it in two separate functions. The lower jaw functions like a wood pecker which it uses to pick branches and reach cavities to remove grubs and other insects. The Akia Po La Au is destined to become extinct within our lifetime, due to habitat loss and introduced disease. The paintings title reflects the real life predominance of males to females in the few wild enclaves remaining today. Without females, these bachelors mournful songs are heard only by each other.
Original in a private collection.
